Abstract

This study ascertained school-based assessment (SBA)
skills needed by secondary school mathematics teachers in
Anambra State. Descriptive survey design was adopted for
the study. Two research questions guided the study. Simple
random sampling procedure was used to draw 200
mathematics teachers from a population of 516 in the
State. The school- based assessment skills needed by
mathematics teachers questionnaire (SBASNMTQ) was
used as instrument for data collection. The SBASNMTQ
was validated by two experts. Single administration
method was used to obtain data for reliability test.
Cronbach’s Alpha formula was used to establish the
reliability of SBASNMTQ which yielded a reliability index
of 0.89. The SBASNMTQ was administered to
mathematics teachers from the sampled schools. 200
questionnaire items were distributed but only 188 were

recovered and used for data analysis. The research
questions were answered using mean and standard
deviation. Findings of the study indicated that; 4 out of 5
identified skills are needed by mathematics teachers for
proper implementation of school-based assessment for
effective teaching and learning; both urban and rural
mathematics teachers had good mean ratings on SBA skill
needs. Based on the findings, it was concluded that in
Anambra state, all identified school-based assessment
skills were needed by secondary school mathematics
teachers for effective teaching and learning. The study
recommended among others that mathematics teachers
should continue to properly implement school-based
assessment in their course of mathematics instructions to
ensure effective teaching and learning.
