UNDERLINING ISSUES IN OPTIMIZING CREATIVITY AMONG CHEMISTRY EDUCATION STUDENTS

Abstract

This paper examined the “concept of creativity and
creativity in science”, and “chemistry education and
creativity”. Some of the reasons adduced by some
researchers for the slow pace of creativity in chemistry
education were highlighted. Apart from ineffective
teaching strategies and abstract nature of some concepts,
other psychological and social issues were raised and
discussed. Among them are: Characteristics of a creative
personality, traits of creativity, and tools of teaching for
creativity. The paper finally observed that young children
are inherently creative, and opined that to optimize
creativity in chemistry education, teachers must
encourage learners to think literally and make
associations. They must be able to reinterpret and apply
their learning in new contexts. Tools of teaching for
creativity like brainstorming and metaphorical thinking
were emphasized. Among the recommendations made was

a call on teachers to tap into the creative potentials of
students by introducing classroom activities that will
arouse their imaginations and curiosities.
