ANALYSIS OF GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS’ ACTIVITIES TOWARDS CURBING MALADJUSTMENT BEHAVIOURS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ONITSHA EDUCATION ZONE OF ANAMBRA STATE.

Abstract

The study aimed at analyzing the activities of Guidance
Counsellors towards curbing secondary school student’s
maladjustment behaviour in Onitsha Education Zone of
Anambra State. Maladjustment behaviours refer to
unacceptable mannerism in which individuals relate with
others. The study is a descriptive survey. The population
for the study comprised all the students, teacher
counsellors and counsellors of all public secondary
schools in the area. Multistage sampling was used to
select a sample size of 460 respondents. Two research
questions guided the study. A 15- item researcherdeveloped
structured questionnaire was used for datacollection. Data collection was done by the researcher
and three assistants. Data collection lasted for one month.
The findings revealed among others that irregularity to
school, disobeying school rules and regulations,
examination malpractice, smoking, alcoholism, indecent
dressing are found among secondary school students of
Onitsha Education Zone of Anambra State. The findings
also showed that counsellors engaged in such activities as
group counselling, individual counselling, organizing
orientation for new students and leadership training for
school prefects to curb these maladjustment behaviours.
The study further recommended that counsellors should
intensity their activities towards curbing these
maladjustment behaviours and these counsellors activities
should be optimally supervised.
